A mother’s worst nightmare unfolded in broad daylight in Rangpur’s Pirganj Upazila when two unidentified muggers held a knife to the throat of a four-year-old child to snatch a gold chain from a primary school teacher. The harrowing robbery occurred on Monday, 24 August, leaving local educators and residents shaken by the audacity of the attack near key administrative facilities.
Shamima Akter, an assistant teacher at Mokimpur No. 2 Government Primary School, was returning home at around 3:45 pm alongside three of her colleagues. They were travelling in a battery-powered auto-rickshaw with Ms Akter holding her four-year-old daughter, Tiasha Jannat, on her lap. As the vehicle neared the local Nutrition Office, situated right beside the Pirganj Fire Station in Mokimpur village, two men on a motorcycle intercepted the auto-rickshaw and blocked its path.
Without warning, one of the assailants pressed a sharp knife against the neck of the young child, shouting threats at the occupants to hand over their valuables immediately or face lethal consequences. Terror-stricken by the immediate threat to the child’s life, Ms Akter and her colleagues began screaming for help. Taking advantage of the shock and panic, the robbers forcibly snatched a gold chain weighing approximately 1.06 bhori (around 12.3 grams) from Ms Akter’s neck, valued at roughly 250,000 taka. The perpetrators then sped away on their motorcycle before onlookers could intervene.
Following the terrifying ordeal, Ms Akter and her three colleagues visited Pirganj Police Station to lodge a formal written complaint against the two unidentified individuals. The incident has raised serious security concerns among local residents and teaching staff, given that the crime took place in the afternoon near public service infrastructure.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pirganj Police Station, Najmul Haq, confirmed the receipt of the complaint and stated that law enforcement officers have launched an immediate investigation into the incident. Police are gathering evidence and reviewing local movements to identify the suspects, assuring that those responsible will be apprehended and brought to justice swiftly.
