Tensions ran high along the northern border of Bangladesh on Tuesday afternoon after members of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) illegally crossed into Bangladeshi territory and assaulted local farmers, triggering a heated clash that forced the intruders to flee and abandon their weaponry. The incident occurred at around 4:30 pm near Main Pillar 907 in the Banchowki-Amjhol border area, located within the Gotamari Union of Hatibandha Upazila under Lalmonirhat district.
According to local residents and sources from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), several Bangladeshi farmers were tending to their agricultural plots near the Amjhol border when a patrol of BSF personnel crossed the international boundary into Bangladeshi territory. Without provocation, the Indian border guards began indiscriminately beating the farmers. Hearing the commotion and cries for assistance, nearby villagers rushed to the scene to defend their neighbours.
A sharp tussle broke out between the gathered Bangladeshi civilians and the BSF personnel. Overpowered by the fast-growing crowd of angry local residents, the Indian guards retreated hastily back across the border into Indian territory. In their haste to escape the confrontation, the fleeing BSF members dropped two shotguns and a walkie-talkie communication set on Bangladeshi soil.
Two Bangladeshi farmers sustained injuries during the physical assault carried out by the Indian troops. Both injured individuals received prompt primary medical care following the altercation, according to official statements provided by the BGB.
Upon receiving urgent reports from the villagers, BGB personnel stationed at the nearby Banchowki border outpost arrived swiftly at the scene. Border guards secured the area, retrieved the two discarded shotguns along with the communication device, and took all recovered equipment into official custody.
Lieutenant Colonel Mehdi Imam, Commanding Officer of BGB Battalion-15, inspected the location shortly after the confrontation to assess the security situation and speak with local residents. He confirmed that formal communications have been initiated with their Indian counterparts to address the cross-border intrusion and subsequent assault.
The BGB has formally called for a flag meeting at the battalion commander level to lodge a strong protest against the illegal entry of BSF personnel and to discuss the formal process surrounding the recovered arms and equipment. Further details are expected to be released following the conclusion of the high-level meeting between the two border forces.
