Arsenal Sign Swedish International Viktor Gyökeres

Arsenal have officially confirmed the signing of Swedish international striker Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting Lisbon, marking a major reinforcement to their attacking options ahead of the new season.

The 27-year-old forward, who scored 39 goals last season in all competitions and memorably netted a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City, joins the North London club on a five-year contract.

Arsenal’s Summer Signings 2025

Player Position Fee
Viktor Gyökeres Striker £55m (rising to £64m)
Cristhian Mosquera Defender £13m
Martin Zubimendi Midfielder £60m
Christian Nørgaard Midfielder £10m
Kepa Arrizabalaga Goalkeeper £5m
Noni Madueke Forward £48.5m

This makes Gyökeres Mikel Arteta’s sixth signing of the summer and possibly the most crucial as Arsenal aim to strengthen their frontline.

Immediate Role and Pre-Season Plans

Arsenal revealed the transfer with a succinct message on social media platform X:

“This is where you need to be. Viktor Gyökeres is a Gunner.”

Gyökeres is expected to join up with the squad immediately on their pre-season tour of Singapore and Hong Kong. The Gunners are scheduled to face:

  • Newcastle United at the Singapore National Stadium on Sunday, and
  • Tottenham Hotspur in Hong Kong on 31 July.

Career Journey: From Brommapojkarna to the Emirates

Gyökeres’ career has been one of persistence and rise through the ranks:

Club Period Notes
IF Brommapojkarna – January 2018 Youth and early professional career
Brighton & Hove Albion 2018 – 2021 Signed but rarely featured for first team
Loan to St Pauli 2019 – 2020 Regular game time in 2. Bundesliga
Loan to Swansea City 2020 – 2021 Championship experience
Loan & Move to Coventry 2021 Became a key player for the Sky Blues
Sporting Lisbon 2023 – 2025 Scored 97 goals in 102 games
Arsenal FC July 2025 – Present Major summer signing

His remarkable scoring record at Sporting has captured global attention, particularly after his €20.5 million move from Coventry in 2023, following their heartbreaking penalty loss in the Championship play-off final to Luton.

Filling Arsenal’s Striker Void

Arsenal endured the end of last season without a recognised striker, with both Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz sidelined due to long-term injuries. Even before their absence, the club struggled to find a consistent goal scorer.

Arteta now hopes Gyökeres will provide the clinical edge required to compete for major silverware, including the Premier League and Champions League.

“Gyökeres brings physicality, pace, and lethal finishing—exactly what we need up front,” a club source commented.

Club Contracts and Infrastructure Update

In addition to new signings, Arsenal have also been securing key contracts this summer:

  • Gabriel Magalhães has signed a new deal.
  • Myles Lewis-Skelly, one of the club’s top youth prospects, has also committed long-term.
  • A contract extension for teenager Ethan Nwaneri is reportedly close to completion.

With Andrea Berta, Arsenal’s new Sporting Director, making an immediate impact, the Gunners appear focused on building both squad depth and long-term stability in pursuit of major trophies under Arteta’s leadership.
