Police authorities across Gazipur district recovered four bodies in separate incidents on Saturday, 29 August, including those of a child and a teenager. The fatalities stemmed from a violent dispute over cutting grass, a drowning following a missing person report, a discovery in a forest, and a fatal railway accident.
In Kapasia sub-district, a ongoing dispute over cutting grass for livestock turned deadly in the Pabur Dakshin Para area. Local police reported that 18-year-old Niloy Sarkar, son of Monir Sarkar, engaged in a heated argument with his cousin, Russel, on Saturday morning. Following the altercation, Russel laid in wait near the Abdur Rashid Orphanage along a paved road. As Niloy returned from a local market at around 11:30 am, Russel launched a sudden attack, striking Niloy on the head with a sharp weapon. Bystanders rushed the heavily bleeding youth to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur, where attending physicians declared him dead on arrival. Officer-in-Charge of Kapasia Police Station, Mohammad Nasir Ahmed, confirmed that law enforcement teams have launched operations to apprehend the fleeing suspect, and formal legal proceedings are underway.
Kapasia was also the site of a tragic search effort ending in the Brahmaputra River. Five-year-old Zahid Hasan, son of Mizanur Rahman from Khirati village in Ghagtia Union, went missing on the afternoon of 27 August. After exhaustive searches by family members yielded no trace of the boy, a general diary entry was lodged with Kapasia Police Station. At approximately 8:00 am on Saturday, local residents spotted the child’s body floating near a riverbank ghat roughly 400 metres from his home. Police officers recovered the floating remains shortly after being alerted by villagers.
Further south in Kaliakair sub-district, officers recovered the heavily decomposed body of an unidentified man hanging from a tree inside a forest in the Golachipa area. Local residents noticed the body around noon and immediately notified authorities. A police detail retrieved the remains and dispatched them to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Investigators are examining whether the death was a suicide or involved foul play, with forensic teams working to establish the victim’s identity.
In a separate incident along the busy transport corridors of Gazipur, a mute young man lost his life on the tracks. According to Farooq Ahmed, In-Charge of the Joydebpur Railway Police Outpost, Abu Bakar was struck and killed by a passing train near Mouchak Railway Station on the Joydebpur-Dhaka rail route at around 10:00 am. As the victim resided in the immediate vicinity of the station, relatives gathered at the scene and recovered the body for local funeral proceedings.
