Tensions over leadership appointments to the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) in Noakhali Sadar erupted into violence on Saturday afternoon, leaving at least ten political activists injured. Clashes broke out between two opposing factions of the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) across Ashwadia Union, turning local thoroughfares into chaotic battlegrounds and bringing regional traffic to a complete standstill.
The violence flared around 4:00 pm on Saturday, 29 August, spreading from the Didimoni Bazaar area through to the front of the Ashwadia Union Parishad complex. Rival groups, armed with native weapons and wooden staves, engaged in intermittent skirmishes until roughly 7:00 pm. Panic swept through nearby shopkeepers and residents as the opposing groups threw blows and chased each other through public spaces. The prolonged disturbance disrupted vehicular movement along the busy Sonapur-Basurhat road, causing a severe traffic gridlock that lasted over an hour.
Disputes had been brewing within the local political apparatus for several days following the announcement of a newly formed committee for the Ashwadia Union unit of the JCD. Deprived activists and prospective leaders who failed to secure positions accused party decision-makers of favouritism and improper selection procedures. Dissatisfaction turned into open confrontation when activists from both sides met in the bazaar area on Saturday afternoon. An initial verbal altercation over the committee’s legitimacy quickly escalated into a full-scale physical brawl.
At least ten people sustained varied injuries in the ensuing violence, suffering lacerations and blunt-force trauma from staves and improvised weapons. Local residents and bystanders rushed to intervene, rescuing the injured activists and arranging immediate transportation to Noakhali General Hospital and several local clinics for medical treatment.
Standard protocol for student political wings in Bangladesh involves periodically forming union-, upazila-, and district-level committees to organise campus networks and spearhead youth activities. However, leadership posts are highly prized, often serving as critical launchpads for mainstream political careers within parent political parties like the BNP. As a result, committee announcements frequently trigger fierce internal rivalries, with aggrieved factions staging protests, blockades, or physical confrontations when their candidates are bypassed.
Law enforcement agencies moved to restore order after receiving emergency calls regarding the violent altercation. A squad from the local police department arrived at the scene, dispersed the armed groups, and cleared the Sonapur-Basurhat road to resume normal traffic flow.
Commenting on the incident, Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Md. Liakat Akbar confirmed that police intervention successfully contained the situation. He noted that the area has since returned to normal, though extra police forces remain deployed at strategic locations throughout Ashwadia Union to prevent any further escalation or retaliatory violence between the rival political factions.
