Panic gripped the capital’s Gandaria neighbourhood on Sunday evening after unidentified miscreants opened indiscriminate fire near a local office, leaving three people—including a young woman—injured with gunshot wounds. The incident occurred during a sudden clash on the street in the Munshirteek area of Gandaria, transforming a routine Sunday dusk into a scene of chaos and violence.
All three victims were swiftly rescued from the spot and rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for immediate treatment. The injured have been identified as 33-year-old tea vendor Alamgir, 18-year-old restaurant worker Siam, and 20-year-old local resident Asha Akter. Medical staff at DMCH confirmed that each victim sustained gunshot wounds to different parts of their bodies as they were caught unexpectedly in the crossfire.
Recounting the terrifying sequence of events from his hospital bed, Siam explained that he resides in the nearby Jatrabari area and works at a local eatery. He had traveled to Gandaria on Sunday evening to visit his uncle’s tea stall in Munshirteek. When street violence erupted outside without warning, Siam rushed to pull down the metal shutter of the shop to protect himself and others inside. Before he could fully secure the door, a stray bullet struck him near the upper left side of his chest and shoulder.
Another victim, Alamgir, was operating his own tea shop nearby when the violence broke out. His wife, Jannati Akter, stated that gunshots suddenly rang out along the road directly in front of their shop. Alamgir was standing inside the premises when a bullet pierced the front of the shop and hit him square in the middle of his forehead.
The third victim, Asha Akter, was simply commuting through the area when the chaos unfolded. She stated that she was walking home down the street and unexpectedly found herself trapped amidst the violent confrontation. A stray round struck her in the right thigh, bringing her to the ground. Like the other victims, Asha noted that the clash escalated so rapidly that she was unable to identify the gunmen or determine the motive behind the shooting.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH Police Outpost, confirmed the incident, stating that all three individuals were receiving emergency medical attention at the hospital. He added that the relevant police station had been promptly notified, and formal legal proceedings, alongside investigations to identify and apprehend the shooters, are currently underway.
