A ten-year-old student died following a fall from the rooftop of a madrasa in the capital’s West Jurain area, just hours after his family brought him back from home against his wishes.
The victim, identified as ten-year-old Yamin, was a student in the hifz department at the Tashfilul Quran Hafezi Madrasa. According to the institution’s principal, Ferdous Ahmed, the incident occurred at approximately 9:30 PM on Sunday when the child fell from the four-storey building’s roof. Following the fall, staff rushed him in a critical condition to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where attending physicians pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Madrasa administration officials have been unable to explain the exact circumstances leading to the fall. Principal Ahmed explained that Yamin had gone home last Wednesday following the conclusion of regular madrasa classes. When the holiday ended, the child expressed strong reluctance to return. The principal noted that the boy’s father, Rafiqul Islam, who resides in the Mohammadbagh area of Kadamtali, had telephoned him asking for assistance in bringing the boy back, though the principal did not go to fetch him personally. Eventually, Yamin’s grandmother escorted him back to the residential facility on Sunday night.
Recounting the sequence of events leading up to the tragedy, the principal stated that he spotted Yamin standing in the fourth-floor stairwell talking with other pupils shortly after his arrival. He instructed the boy to head downstairs for dinner before walking away. Moments later, word spread that Yamin had fallen from the fourth-floor roof.
Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, confirmed that the child’s body has been transferred to the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination, and local law enforcement authorities have been formally notified.
Meanwhile, Kadamtali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Ashrafuzzaman stated that no formal complaint had been lodged by the family as of Monday afternoon. Police officials have initiated independent inquiries to determine the precise events surrounding the fatal incident.
