Hopes Pinned on 28 July Dashed as Tarique Rahman Does Not Return

Throughout the past month, widespread speculation circulated on social media suggesting that Tarique Rahman, the Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), would return to Bangladesh on 28 July. Some online media outlets reported the same, claiming that his long exile would end on this specific date. Energised by the rumour, several party activists began preparing to welcome their leader at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

However, by the end of the day, it became clear that Tarique Rahman had not returned, leaving grassroots activists disappointed and confused.

Notably, the BNP’s central leadership never confirmed any specific return date. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir consistently stated, “Tarique Rahman may return at any time.” Despite this, various online pages, YouTube channels, and political gossip had spread the now-disproven claim that 28 July was fixed for his return.

A reliable source within the BNP has indicated that several legal matters, including the review of existing cases against Tarique Rahman, are still pending. His return is expected only after these legal issues are fully resolved.

A senior BNP leader, speaking anonymously, said:

“We are extremely cautious regarding our leader’s return. Some aspects of the legal proceedings are still ongoing. Until those are concluded, it is not possible to specify a return date.”

Internal sources have confirmed that if any decision is made regarding Tarique Rahman’s homecoming, it will be formally announced by the party. They urged members not to be swayed by unverified dates or rumours.

Disappointment echoed throughout social media platforms all day. Some supporters posted comments such as “Missed the date again!” while others questioned, “Will Tarique Rahman ever return at all?”
