Police have recovered the hanging body of a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) soldier from a watchtower in the Jaintiapur upazila of Sylhet. The grim discovery was made on Tuesday morning, sending shockwaves through the local security camp and the soldier’s home district.
The deceased was identified as 25-year-old Jamil Hasan Shish, son of Sheikh Fazlur Rahman from Ishanghati village under Kashinagar union in Lohagara upazila of Narail district. He was stationed at the Minatila Border Outpost (BOP) under the Kendri border area of Jaintiapur, operating under the Sylhet Battalion (48 BGB).
According to initial findings from law enforcement authorities, the incident is believed to have occurred sometime between midnight and dawn on Monday. Investigators suspect that the soldier hanged himself inside the Minatila BOP watchtower during this overnight window.
Local authorities moved quickly once the situation came to light. By 7:00 AM, Jaintiapur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Molla and Assistant Commissioner for Land Md Monirul Islam arrived at the scene to oversee the initial investigation. Local public representatives, including Fakhrul Islam, chairman of the 2nd Jaintiapur Union Parishad, and local council member Abdul Halim, were also present at the camp during the inspection.
In the presence of the executive magistrate and BGB officials, police recovered the body, completed the preliminary inquest report, and arranged for its transfer. The mortal remains were subsequently dispatched to the morgue at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Molla, the officer-in-charge of Jaintiapur Model Police Station, confirmed that a formal unnatural death case has been registered in connection with the incident. Law enforcement agencies have launched a thorough investigation to uncover the underlying circumstances leading up to the tragedy.
