A woman named Newaz Chowdhury Mitu has died following a fire that broke out in a rented apartment on the seventh floor of a residential building in the capital’s Mohammadpur area.

The incident unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday at approximately 03:30 local time. The flat is situated at house number 15 on road 11, within block E of the Chandrima Model Town neighbourhood. At the time of the blaze, Ms Mitu was alone inside the residence. Fire service personnel and local responders later recovered her body from the flat’s bathroom.

Preliminary assessments by local authorities suggest that the victim may have succumbed to smoke inhalation triggered by the fire. However, the precise origin and cause of the fire remain unconfirmed, and investigators are currently examining the scene to piece together the sequence of events.

The victim originally hailed from the Mazampur area of Kushtia district. Local law enforcement has registered a case of unnatural death in connection with the tragedy. Officers from Mohammadpur police station, led by Officer-in-Charge Mezbah Uddin, have launched a formal inquiry to determine how the fire started and to establish the exact cause of death through post-mortem examinations.

Residential fires in densely populated urban centres like Dhaka frequently highlight concerns regarding fire safety compliance, ventilation systems in multi-storey apartment blocks, and emergency preparedness. Investigators are expected to review building safety standards and electrical installations within the premises as part of the ongoing probe.
