U.S. Ties Strained by Dr Yunus, Claims Golam Mawla Rony

Political analyst and former Member of Parliament Golam Mawla Rony has remarked that the United States is gradually becoming constrained because of its association with Dr Muhammad Yunus. According to Rony, American decisions—particularly the stance of the Trump administration—are bringing significant challenges for Bangladesh’s interim government, impacting its morale and severely undermining its international image, integrity, and overall reputation.

He stated:

“The government’s name, fame, and standing on the global stage are being thoroughly disrupted by this situation.”

Rony further highlighted a specific incident involving Dr Yunus in Dubai:

“When Dr Yunus visited Dubai, he spoke with Elon Musk, which eventually led to the introduction of Starlink in Bangladesh. However, that move has now backfired.”

According to Rony, the fallout stems from the deteriorating relationship between Elon Musk and Donald Trump. During Yunus’s phone conversation with Musk in Dubai, Trump was reportedly seated nearby. This later escalated into a political rift, with Trump now allegedly exerting full force to have Musk jailed. As a result, Rony claimed:

“The relationship with Musk has turned into a political boomerang for Dr Yunus.”

On trade matters, Rony addressed the economic consequences of this shifting diplomatic tone:

Export Focus Details
Major Importer United States
Export Volume $8 billion (from Bangladesh to U.S.)
Product Category Primarily garments
Issue Increased U.S. tariffs
Government Action Repeated diplomatic efforts to reduce tariffs
Outcome Unsuccessful; rising discomfort due to perceived hostility

Rony expressed concern that despite Bangladesh’s intense lobbying efforts to reduce U.S. tariffs on exports, the results have been disheartening. The treatment Bangladesh is receiving from the U.S., in his view, is “deeply unfriendly” and “highly uncomfortable” for the current government.
