Authorities have not yet determined what caused the bus to veer off course or crash, and a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident remains underway.

The stretch of road where the disaster took place connects two of Egypt’s most prominent tourist destinations along the Red Sea coast. Both Dahab and Nuweiba draw thousands of international travellers every year, renowned for their diving sites, beach resorts, and proximity to historical landmarks.

Road traffic accidents remain a persistent public safety challenge across Egypt, where inadequate road maintenance, poor infrastructure, and dangerous driving practices regularly lead to severe incidents. Official figures released by Egyptian authorities indicate that traffic fatalities reached nearly 6,000 across the country in 2025 alone.

Wednesday’s tragedy highlights an ongoing pattern of major collisions on Egypt’s highways. Just last month, a violent collision involving two heavy goods trucks in the north-eastern province of Ismailia resulted in 18 deaths and left 30 people injured.
