The main tactical intrigue surrounds how Adelaide plan to deploy Stokes. Last season, Matt Short and Chris Lynn formed the franchise’s preferred opening partnership. Although Lynn has not yet been re-signed for the new campaign, Paine indicated that even if Lynn returns, a reshuffle at the top of the order remains on the cards.

Paine sees Stokes as the ideal candidate to exploit Australian conditions from the very first ball. The coach noted that the bounce and pace of local wickets align naturally with the Englishman’s aggressive strokeplay. His ability to accelerate seamlessly, combine raw power with technical finesse, and navigate both pace and spin makes him a versatile asset at the top of the order.

While Stokes is not traditionally considered a T20 opener—having opened the batting in just 16 of his 148 T20 innings—his statistical profile at the top of the order is remarkably strong. Historically, his highest batting averages and strike rates in the format have come when opening. Furthermore, one of his two career T20 centuries was scored while starting the innings.

Stokes has spent the vast majority of his T20 career operating in the middle order at numbers three, four, or five, with his last appearance in the format occurring during The Hundred in 2024. Nevertheless, Paine remains confident that opening the batting represents the best strategic fit for both Stokes and the Strikers as they target BBL success.
