A tragic head-on collision between a passenger bus and a pharmaceutical delivery microbus has claimed the life of a driver and left another person injured in Palashbari Upazila, Gaibandha. The fatal crash occurred around 10:00 am on Thursday along the busy Gaibandha–Palashbari road in the Majhipara area.
The deceased driver has been identified as 40-year-old Masud Rana, son of Fayzar Rahman from the Bashgara neighbourhood of Thakurgaon Sadar. A passenger in the microbus, identified as Md Sani, sustained injuries during the crash and was promptly admitted to Gaibandha General Hospital for treatment. Details regarding Sani’s complete identity remain unavailable at this stage.
Eyewitnesses and law enforcement officials reported that the incident unfolded when a Dhaka-bound passenger bus operated by Al-Hamra Paribahan collided head-on with the oncoming pharmaceutical microbus. The impact of the collision was severe enough to knock the passenger coach off the tarmac, sending it tumbling into a roadside ditch.
The microbus suffered extensive damage, its front end crumpled upon impact, leaving the driver trapped inside the mangled wreckage. Upon receiving emergency reports, fire service personnel dispatched a rescue unit to the scene. Emergency workers extracted Masud Rana’s body from the vehicle, though he had already succumbed to his injuries.
Confirming the incident, Sarwar Alam Khan, Officer-in-Charge of Palashbari Police Station, stated that police officers quickly secured the location and recovered the body. Authorities have impounded the Al-Hamra Paribahan bus involved in the crash; however, the bus driver and his assistant managed to flee the scene immediately following the collision.
The Gaibandha–Palashbari road serves as a crucial transit route connecting rural sub-districts to major inter-city highways leading to Dhaka and regional hubs. Head-on collisions on these two-lane highways often stem from reckless overtaking and excessive speeding, issues that local communities have repeatedly urged authorities to address. Police confirmed that active efforts are under way to trace the absconding driver and assistant, and formal legal proceedings regarding the collision are currently in motion.
