Zverev Gains Insight from Retired Rival Rafael Nadal

Alexander Zverev, returning to competition as the top seed at the ATP Toronto Masters, is looking to rebuild his confidence following a disappointing first-round loss at Wimbledon last month. The world number three is now drawing on wisdom from an iconic source—retired legend Rafael Nadal.

Strategic Visit to Mallorca

Earlier this month, Zverev travelled to Mallorca, Spain, to spend time at the Rafa Nadal Academy, where he engaged in extended discussions with Rafa Nadal and his uncle and former coach, Toni Nadal.

Location Rafa Nadal Academy, Mallorca, Spain
Duration 10 days

Outcome Valuable discussions, potential coaching talks

Although he did not secure Toni Nadal as a full-time travelling coach, the German revealed that the conversations were illuminating:

“Toni is a great coach, no question about that, but he’s also someone who inspires confidence,” Zverev said. “When he speaks—and when Rafa speaks—you listen.”

Zverev elaborated that Rafa Nadal offered perspective both as a former opponent and now as an observer, giving him strategic feedback about his current game.

“Rafa gave me great insight into what it’s actually like to play against me. We spoke for hours, sometimes into the night over dinner. It was incredibly helpful.”

Coaching Discussions Ongoing

Despite his long-standing relationship with his father as his main coach, Zverev is exploring the possibility of adding Toni Nadal to his coaching team—at least on a part-time basis.

“I’m trying to convince him to do more weeks with me,” said Zverev. “We’re in talks, but Toni is a very busy man. He’s already committed to several events, so we’ll see how things progress.”

Toni Nadal, best known for guiding Rafael Nadal’s illustrious career, has also briefly worked with Canada’s Félix Auger-Aliassime. His potential collaboration with Zverev could bring invaluable tactical discipline and mental strength to the German’s team.

Zverev, a former champion in Canada (2017), now aims to make a strong showing in Toronto as he moves forward, bolstered by the mentoring of a tennis great.
