A mobile court in Mirzapur, Tangail, sentenced three young men to terms of imprisonment on Thursday afternoon following separate offences involving maternal abuse and illegal drug consumption. The summary judicial proceedings were conducted by the Mirzapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer and executive magistrate, Johirul Alam, on the sub-district administration premises.
Among the convicted individuals is Sagar Mia, a resident of Rakerteki village in Gorai Union and son of Abdul Kader. Sagar, an auto-rickshaw driver by profession and a known drug user, received a six-month custodial sentence for repeatedly assaulting his mother. According to local police sources, Sagar’s family life had been fraught with domestic turmoil; despite being married twice, he frequently subjected his mother to severe physical violence whilst under the influence of narcotics or during financial disputes. Unable to endure the ongoing abuse, his mother eventually lodged a formal written complaint with the local police station seeking state protection and legal intervention.
Acting on the victim’s formal complaint, law enforcement officers conducted an operation on Thursday morning, apprehending Sagar at his residence. During connected anti-narcotics drives in the area, police also caught two other young men—Mostakin Ahmed, son of Golam Mostafa from Gandhabyapara, and Bazlur Rahman, son of Abdul Sattar from Uttar Gandhabyapara—in the act of consuming illegal drugs.
All three detainees were promptly presented before the executive magistrate at the Upazila Nirbahi Officer’s headquarters. Upon evaluating the evidence presented by the police and hearing the details of the offences, Executive Magistrate Johirul Alam handed down a six-month prison sentence to Sagar Mia for domestic abuse and disorderly conduct. Meanwhile, Mostakin Ahmed and Bazlur Rahman were each sentenced to seven days of imprisonment for public drug usage.
Sub-Inspector Sohel from the Deohata Police Outpost confirmed the summary trial outcomes, stating that law enforcement escorted all three convicts directly to the Tangail District Gaol on Thursday afternoon to serve their respective sentences.
