The Traffic Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has launched an extensive day-long operation targeting traffic violators across the capital, filing 2,206 cases in a single day. Conducted on Thursday, 10 September, the enforcement drive led to the impounding of 436 vehicles into police dumping grounds and the towing of 306 vehicles using wreckers to ease congestion across major corridors.
DMP officials confirmed that the crackdowns were carried out simultaneously across all eight traffic divisions in the metropolis. The drive targeted a wide range of infractions, including unauthorized parking, driving without valid driving licences or fitness certificates, running red lights, and operating unregistered vehicles. Motorcyclists and public transport operators accounted for a significant portion of the total citations.
Among the individual administrative zones, Traffic-Mirpur recorded the highest volume of legal actions, with officers issuing 471 cases. The division seized or cited 34 buses, 19 trucks, 38 covered vans, 45 CNG-run autorickshaws, and 224 motorcycles. Traffic-Uttara followed closely, registering 432 cases against 38 buses, 15 trucks, 12 covered vans, 39 CNGs, and 178 motorcycles.
In the south and east of the city, Traffic-Wari filed 304 cases, which involved 25 buses, 31 trucks, 25 covered vans, 39 CNGs, and 104 motorcycles. Meanwhile, Traffic-Gulshan recorded 311 cases, penalising 35 buses, 3 trucks, 14 covered vans, 21 CNGs, and 86 motorcycles. Traffic-Motijheel processed 265 violations, comprising 11 buses, 1 truck, 14 covered vans, 59 CNGs, and 131 motorcycles.
Central and western zones also saw firm enforcement. Traffic-Lalbagh registered 161 cases (9 buses, 17 trucks, 8 CNGs, 90 motorcycles), while Traffic-Tejgaon logged 143 cases (11 buses, 3 trucks, 11 covered vans, 20 CNGs, 56 motorcycles). The lowest volume was recorded in Traffic-Ramna, where 119 cases were filed against 11 buses, 8 covered vans, 4 CNGs, and 36 motorcycles.
Traffic management in Dhaka remains a formidable challenge due to severe gridlock, rapid urban population growth, and high road congestion. Special operations of this scale reflect ongoing efforts by the DMP to restore road discipline, ensure public safety, and curb chronic traffic violations across the capital. Police authorities reiterated that similar operations will continue unabated until standard road compliance is achieved.
