Bangladesh women’s cricket team will square off against arch-rivals India today in the semi-finals of the Women’s Asia Cup at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Having set an explicit target of reaching the knockout stage prior to departing the country, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty fulfilled that ambition after her side comfortably defeated the United Arab Emirates by 34 runs in their final group match. The victory marked the second consecutive time the Tigresses have advanced to the Asia Cup semi-finals.
History, however, presents a formidable hurdle. In the previous edition of the tournament, Bangladesh encountered India at the exact same semi-final stage, suffering a crushing ten-wicket defeat. Despite that past setback, Joty remains resolute about standing toe-to-toe with the regional heavyweights.
“India are an exceptionally strong team,” Joty noted following the match against the UAE. “We will focus on playing our absolute best cricket against them. An outcome will inevitably follow, but the primary requirement is that we leave everything on the field.”
Confidence within the squad remains high, particularly among key performers. Top-order batter Sharmin Akhter Supta, who anchored the innings with a team-high 38 runs against the UAE, insists the squad views the clash as an opportunity rather than a burden.
“If you dwell on negative thoughts, the pressure builds up,” Supta reflected. “Playing against a top-tier side like India should be a source of joy. To win championships, you have to test yourself against the best. We choose to enjoy the challenge rather than feel weighed down by it.”
On the bowling front, pace bowler Marufa Akhtar represents Bangladesh’s primary trump card. Marufa has been in sparkling form throughout the campaign, capturing seven wickets in three matches with her disciplined seam bowling.
While India enter the contest as firm favourites, Bangladesh hold fond memories of their landmark 2018 Asia Cup campaign. That historic tournament saw the Tigresses stun India in a dramatic final to claim their maiden continental trophy. Joty’s charges will be desperate to channel that same spirit tonight and script another famous upset.
