Some Parties Vow Not to Contest Elections Without Proportional Representation: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has remarked that certain political parties in Bangladesh have pledged not to participate in any elections unless a proportional representation (PR) system is implemented.

Speaking at a memorial and discussion event marking the fifth death anniversary of former Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal General Secretary Shafiul Bari Babu, held on Tuesday (29 July) at the National Press Club, Fakhrul criticised the promotion of the PR system by some political factions.

“Regrettably, some political parties in our country are not only promoting the PR system but have pledged not to go to the polls without it,” Fakhrul said.

He pointed out that the general public in Bangladesh does not understand the PR system.

“Many people do not even know what PR is. They still struggle with EVMs, let alone grasp the complexities of PR. So how will they understand PR?” he asked. “We must step away from such foreign concepts unfamiliar to our society and culture.”

Fakhrul stressed the need to maintain the existing electoral framework that people are accustomed to, saying:

“Let the people vote in a system they understand. Let them have the representation they deserve. That’s how problems will be solved. Imposing foreign ideas will not bring a solution. We clearly state: complete the electoral reforms immediately. Announce a national charter. And please, conduct the election on the announced date. Return people’s right to vote — return their democratic rights.”

Plea to Save the Children’s Academy

Addressing another issue, Fakhrul expressed deep sorrow over reports that the current government is planning to demolish the building of the Children’s Academy, which was established by late President Ziaur Rahman.

“I’m heartbroken to hear that the Children’s Academy, founded by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman for the intellectual growth of our children, might be demolished. I’ve already issued a statement and once again urge the authorities: please do not destroy this institution. Children from across the country come here. Let it stand,” he appealed.

Notable Attendees

The memorial event was chaired by BNP Joint Secretary General Habib-Un-Nabi Khan Sohel. Among the attendees were:

  • BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Amanullah Aman
  • Vice Chairman Asaduzzaman Ripon
  • Members of the BNP Standing Committee
  • Leaders from various levels of the party

Fakhrul’s speech conveyed both political caution and emotional concern, highlighting the BNP’s position on electoral systems and cultural heritage preservation.
