Former MP Naimur Rahman Durjoy Shown Arrested in Corruption Case

Naimur Rahman Durjoy, a former Member of Parliament for Manikganj-1 and ex-captain of the Bangladesh national cricket team, has been formally shown as arrested in a case relating to the accumulation of wealth beyond known sources of income.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge, Zakir Hossain Galib, issued the arrest order on Tuesday, 29 July, following a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

According to Aminul Islam, Assistant Director of the ACC’s prosecution division, Durjoy is accused of acquiring illicit assets amounting to BDT 112,181,790 during his tenure as an MP through corruption and misuse of power.

Specific Allegations

  • Misappropriation of BDT 42.2 million from Manikganj Power Generation Ltd.
  • Operation of 13 personal and 9 business bank accounts across financial institutions through which BDT 471.9 million in suspicious transactions occurred.

Durjoy was arrested on the night of 3 July in the Lalmatia area of Dhaka by the Manikganj District Detective Branch (DB) and has been held in custody since.

In a prior development, a Dhaka court had imposed a travel ban on both Durjoy and his wife on 24 October of the previous year.

Durjoy was elected MP for Manikganj-1 under the Awami League ticket in both the 2014 and 2018 general elections.
