A long-standing land dispute culminated in tragedy in Mymensingh’s Tarakanda upazila, where a forty-five-year-old man was intercepted and stabbed to death while on his way to file a lawsuit. The deceased, identified as Akram Mia, was reportedly targeted by his nephew following an altercation that turned physical on a rural road.
The fatal encounter occurred in front of Jabbar’s house in Madhabpur village, located within the Rampur union. According to local law enforcement, Akram Mia, a resident of Nagua village in the neighbouring Bishka union and son of Osman Gani, was travelling by motorcycle to Mymensingh city to initiate legal proceedings against his relatives. His journey was abruptly cut short when his nephew, Alamin, accompanied by several associates, blocked his path.
Tarakanda police sources and local residents revealed that a bitter feud over ancestral land property had poisoned relations between Akram and Alamin for an extended period. Despite multiple local arbitration attempts and community mediation sessions over the years, the family could not reach an amicable settlement. Frustrated by the deadlock, Akram decided to seek formal legal intervention, a move that apparently provoked the confrontation.
As the opposing sides faced each other on the road, a heated argument quickly escalated. Police reports indicate that Akram, armed with a hammer, struck Alamin during the altercation. In immediate retaliation, Alamin pulled out a knife from his waistband and plunged it into Akram’s chest. The severity of the wound left Akram dead at the scene before medical assistance could be summoned.
Sensing the gravity of the incident, local residents alerted the authorities. A team from the Tarakanda Police Station arrived shortly afterwards, recovered the body from the road, and dispatched it to the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
Md. Abdur Rashid, the Officer-in-Charge of Tarakanda Police Station, confirmed the details of the homicide and stated that an extensive investigation is underway. Law enforcement teams have launched targeted raids across the district to apprehend Alamin and his accomplices, who fled the area immediately after the stabbing. The process of filing a formal murder case is currently being finalised by the victim’s immediate family.
