Police have launched an investigation following the recovery of a semi-decomposed body of an unidentified man from the Bangshi River in Dhamrai, situated on the outskirts of the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka.
Officers retrieved the floating corpse late on Sunday night near the Depashai Nayapara sports ground, located within the Sombhag Union of Dhamrai Upazila. Local residents spotted the body drifting in the water and promptly alerted the authorities. A team from the Dhamrai Police Station dispatched to the scene recovered the remains shortly before midnight.
Preliminary inquiries indicate that the deceased was a middle-aged man. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, law enforcement officers were unable to immediately establish his identity at the scene.On Monday morning, the police transferred the body to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue in Dhaka for a detailed post-mortem examination. Forensic analysts expect the autopsy to clarify the exact cause of death and determine whether foul play was involved.
Shahidul Islam, Inspector (Investigation) of Dhamrai Police Station, confirmed that official legal proceedings regarding the incident are already under way. To resolve the identity of the deceased, the local police have formally requested technical support from the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI). Specialized forensic units will collect fingerprint samples and leverage biometric databases to trace the man’s identity.
Dhamrai, an upazila intersected by several river routes including the Bangshi, frequently witnesses challenges related to aquatic search and recovery operations. Authorities have appealed to the public and neighbouring police stations to report any missing persons matching the general description of the deceased to aid the ongoing inquiry.
