Police have arrested four Awami League activists in Sakhipur upazila of Tangail as part of an ongoing operation linked to a case filed over the anti-discrimination movement.
The four were arrested from different parts of Sakhipur on Monday night (14 September). They were taken to a court in Tangail on Tuesday afternoon (15 September), according to police.
Those arrested have been identified as Rezaul Islam, joint secretary of the Gajaria Union Awami League; Niamul Haque, son of former union parishad chairman and Awami League leader Gias Uddin; Jubo League leader Atik Hasan; and Sohag Sikder.
Sakhipur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Murad Hossain confirmed the arrests. He said the four were among the unnamed accused in a case related to the anti-discrimination movement and were detained during a routine police operation.
The arrests come after a political procession was reportedly held in the Dariapur area of Sakhipur on Sunday afternoon (13 September). The procession was organised by the Sakhipur upazila unit of Chhatra League. Video footage of the event was circulated on social media later that evening.
Following the incident, police activity involving members and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations increased in the area. With the latest four arrests, seven activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations have been detained over the past two days, according to information cited in the report.
The sequence of arrests has drawn attention because the latest police action followed the circulation of video footage of the procession. Social media videos of political gatherings can often assist law enforcement in identifying people who allegedly took part in such events, although the legal status of individual suspects is ultimately determined through the judicial process.

The Sakhipur police chief also indicated that the operation would continue. “The operation will continue,” Murad Hossain said, confirming that the arrests were part of the police’s regular activities.
