Police have arrested Asifur Rashid Asif, 55, a local leader of the banned Awami League (AL), for alleged involvement in terrorist activities and attacks on members of the ‘Anti-Discrimination Students Movement’ during the July Uprising in Khulna.

Asif, who served as the president of Ward No. 3 of the Khulna City Unit AL, is the son of the late Abul Hossain Mia and a resident of the Mohewsharpasha Religate area.

The arrest was confirmed through a press statement by Assistant Commissioner (Media) of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP), Khondokar Hossain Ahmad. Acting on a tip-off, KMP’s Detective Branch (DB) conducted a targeted operation on Kedernath Road in the Daulatpur area last night, successfully apprehending Asif after he had been on the run for an extended period.

Following his arrest, Asif was presented before the court, which ordered his immediate transfer to jail custody.
