Bangladeshi singer Mousumi Akter Salma is mourning the death of her father, Fazlul Haque. The singer announced the news in an emotional social media post on Wednesday (16 September) at around 10pm.
Salma kept the message brief, writing, “My father is no more.” She did not provide further details about his death in the post.
The news has brought grief to Salma’s family and relatives. The family has not yet disclosed the cause of Fazlul Haque’s death. Details about his funeral prayer and burial, including when and where they will take place, have also not been announced.
The loss comes as Salma has been busy with several new musical projects. Her recent work includes a duet titled ‘Prem Leela’, recorded with fashion designer and singer Biplab Saha. The song was created around the traditions of rural Bengal and a story of love. Its music video has recently been released and has attracted a favourable response from viewers.
Salma has also returned to Lalon music after a long break. She recently recorded ‘Kunje Ar Bhalo Lage Na Bondhu Bihone’, written and composed by her guru Shafi Mondal. The song is scheduled to be released during the upcoming Durga Puja festivities.
The recording reflects another side of Salma’s musical work, as she has continued to remain connected with folk and traditional Bengali music alongside contemporary projects. Lalon songs occupy a distinctive place in Bengal’s folk tradition, often drawing on themes of human relationships, love and spiritual reflection. Salma’s involvement in such projects has added to the variety of her recent musical activities.
She has also contributed vocals to a new arrangement of Rohon Raj’s popular song ‘Manush Boroi Swarthopor’. Salma recorded the song with Sumi Shabnam, Tasiba, Jarin and Rohon Raj. The music video has already been filmed.
The new version was scheduled for release on Thursday (17 September), the day after Salma shared news of her father’s death. The release was therefore set to come amid a deeply personal period for the singer.
Before the bereavement, Salma had been maintaining a steady schedule of recordings and music-related activities. Her recent projects span duet performances, folk music and newly arranged contemporary songs, showing the range of work she has undertaken in recent months.
For the moment, however, her family is dealing with the loss of Fazlul Haque. Further information about the cause of his death and arrangements for the funeral and burial is awaited from the family.
