Khaleda Zia in Good Health, Will Contest Upcoming Elections: BNP Vice Chairman Mintu

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is in good health and will take part in the upcoming national elections, according to party Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintu.

Speaking at a views exchange meeting with journalists at Grand Sultan Convention Hall in Feni on Wednesday (30 July), Mintu expressed optimism about BNP’s chances in Feni, stating:

“Everyone knows the electoral history of Feni. If the election is fair, Insha’Allah, BNP will win here. There is no concern regarding the election in Feni.”

Election Timing and Caretaker Government

Commenting on the election schedule, Mintu said discussions have been held with BNP’s Acting Chairman in London, leading to a joint statement that the elections would likely be held in the first week of February.

However, he also suggested the possibility of an earlier election, possibly in January, depending on the country’s current political situation.

He further added:

“There is an ongoing case in the Supreme Court regarding the caretaker government. If the court allows the restoration of the caretaker system, then the current interim government may be turned into a caretaker government. As per the rules, elections must be held within 90 days under such a system.”

Comments on Governance and Economic Impact

Mintu remarked that since 2006, there has been no election-time caretaker government in Bangladesh. He argued that without a neutral interim government, citizens are unlikely to see improvement in their economic conditions or quality of life.

The BNP leader’s statements come amid continued debate and legal proceedings over the restoration of a caretaker government system to ensure free and fair elections in the country.
