River Police officers retrieved the bodies of two unidentified men from separate locations along the Buriganga River on Saturday afternoon after receiving reports from local residents. Both remains were subsequently dispatched to the Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations following preliminary inquest reports.
The first recovery occurred around midday after a member of the public alerted authorities via the national emergency helpline, 999. Assistant Sub-Inspector Babul Miah of the Barishur River Police outpost confirmed that officers responded to the call and retrieved the unclothed body of a man, estimated to be around 40 years old, from the middle of the river near Beparighat. Preliminary inspections revealed no visible signs of injury or physical trauma on the corpse. Officers believe the deceased may have been in the water for two to three days prior to discovery.
In a separate incident on the same afternoon, passengers aboard a wooden ferry crossing near the Doleshwar Ghat spotted another body floating in the water and immediately notified the Hasnabad River Police. A team arrived at the scene shortly afterwards to recover the remains of a young man, aged approximately 28. Unlike the first victim, he was found fully clothed in jeans and a long-sleeved shirt. Police reported no external marks of violence during their initial examination at the riverside.
Investigating officers from both outposts are working to establish the identities of the deceased men. Fingerprint cross-referencing through national databases and checks against recent missing person reports filed across local police stations in Dhaka and neighbouring districts are currently underway. Investigators are also examining whether the deaths resulted from accidental drowning, suicide, or foul play, with separate legal proceedings being prepared at the respective police stations.
