BCCI Considers World XI Clash For Centenary Celebrations In 2028

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is exploring plans to host a landmark fixture between the national team and a Rest of the World XI to mark its centenary. Following its Annual General Meeting in Mumbai on Friday, the governing body formally announced that the general body has initiated preliminary preparations to celebrate 100 years of the organisation in 2028.
The commemorative programme is scheduled to begin in December 2027 and run throughout 2028, marking a monumental milestone in Indian cricket history. According to a report by The New Indian Express, the board intends to appoint a dedicated committee to oversee the centenary arrangements. Among the proposals submitted during the meeting, organising a high-profile showdown featuring an Indian XI against a World XI emerged as a major highlight.
Discussions surrounding the exhibition match remain in the early stages, with the precise format and structure of the celebrations yet to be finalized. Even so, the prospect of Indian stars taking on a composite global side has already generated significant intrigue across the cricketing world.
To date, an ICC World XI squad has featured in nine official international matches across formats. The side made its debut in January 2005, competing in a One Day International against an Asia XI in Melbourne to raise funds for tsunami relief. Later that year in October, the World XI faced Australia in the iconic “Super Series,” which comprised three ODIs and a solitary Test match. International cricket returned to Pakistan in September 2017 when the World XI played three Twenty20 Internationals in Lahore, followed by a hurricane relief T20 match against the West Indies at Lord’s in May 2018.
Despite the history of the World XI initiative, the Indian national team has never faced an officially sanctioned ICC World XI side in an international fixture. If the board’s proposal materialises, the prospective match would offer a historic spectacle, celebrating a century of Indian cricket governance while bringing together the sport’s finest international talent on a single pitch.
