Former Local Councillor Brutally Hacked to Death in Tangail

Tragedy struck Tangail on Sunday afternoon as unknown assailants brutally hacked a former local councillor to death in broad daylight. The victim, identified as Surman Reza, was targeted inside an abandoned petrol station in the Darun area of Gharinda Union, situated along the busy Dhaka–Tangail–Jamuna Bridge Highway.

Surman Reza, the son of Hanif Reza, hailed from Bhatchanda village within the Gala Union parishad. Beyond his political career as an elected representative of Gala Union, he was actively involved in local commerce as a businessman.

According to eyewitness accounts and local reports, the attack unfolded suddenly around midday on 20 September. Attackers ambushed Reza inside the derelict filling station premises before inflicting multiple fatal hack wounds and fleeing the scene. The motive behind the horrific murder remains unclear, leaving family members and local residents in shock.

Speaking to reporters following the tragedy, the victim’s brother, Halim Reza, expressed profound disbelief over the violent crime. He noted that his brother had no known feuds that would warrant such a targeted killing, urging law enforcement authorities to conduct an immediate, impartial investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Promptly responding to the incident, police officers from Tangail Sadar arrived at the scene to secure the area and gather forensic evidence. Authorities subsequently retrieved the body and transferred it to the Tangail General Hospital morgue for an official post-mortem examination.

HM Mahbub Rezwan Siddiqui, Additional Superintendent of Police (Tangail Sadar Circle), confirmed the recovery of the body and stated that police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the homicide. Law enforcement officers are currently examining multiple angles, including potential business rivalries and local political disputes, to establish the underlying motive and apprehend those responsible.

The violent murder has raised fresh concerns over safety and crime control along the key highway corridor, with community members demanding swift police action and heightened security measures in the district.
