Global diesel prices have surged to record levels as ongoing conflicts involving Iran and Ukraine severely restrict exports from key energy-producing nations. Market analysts warn that any further deterioration in supply chains could trigger even sharper price increases across international markets in the coming months.
The price surge has been particularly pronounced across Europe and the United States. European diesel futures touched an all-time high last week, more than doubling from levels recorded at the start of 2026. Maritime disruptions along the Red Sea trade route have further compounded the strain. A substantial portion of Saudi Arabian diesel exports relies on this critical maritime corridor, where recent security threats have forced tankers to reroute or face significant delays.
Military engagements across the Middle East and Eastern Europe have left several regional refineries damaged or offline. This shortfall has placed immense pressure on remaining refining facilities globally to bridge the deficit. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), US refineries operated near eight-year capacity highs in late August to meet global demand.
In a newsletter published on Monday, the IEA noted that refining infrastructure worldwide is already operating close to maximum capacity. Consequently, should supply contractions deepen over the coming months, room to expand output and curb rising prices remains extremely limited. Maritime intelligence data from commodity tracking firm Kpler reveals that Middle Eastern diesel exports averaged approximately 800,000 barrels per day between March and August—nearly half the volume recorded during the same period last year. The decline poses a severe challenge for European markets, which relied on the Middle East for roughly 41 per cent of their total diesel imports in 2025.
George Shaw, a senior analyst at Kpler, highlighted that any additional disruption along Red Sea shipping routes would exacerbate vulnerabilities in an already strained market. He emphasized that global refining capacity has become the single largest bottleneck in the international diesel trade.
Compounding the crisis, Moscow instituted a ban on diesel exports in July after Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Russian refineries reduced domestic output. Although US President Donald Trump recently indicated potential discussions regarding a truce on energy infrastructure attacks between Russia and Ukraine, strikes on key energy assets persist on both sides. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on Sunday that he expects to meet with Trump within days to address the situation.
