Umama Fatema to Contest in DUCSU Election

Just a day after the announcement of the election schedule for the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), Umama Fatema, the former spokesperson of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has declared her candidacy.

She has announced her intention to participate as an independent candidate, promising to advocate for students’ fundamental rights and promote research-based leadership.

On Wednesday night (30 July), Umama declared her candidacy in a Facebook post. She is a student of the 2018–19 session in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Dhaka.

In her post, Umama highlighted that she has been working for students’ rights since her first year. She also mentioned her involvement in establishing the platform “Valid Seat is My Right”, which campaigned for the legal allotment of dormitory seats.

Umama stated:

“Without a significant revolution within the university, it is difficult to resolve its deeply rooted issues. Students themselves are capable of leading such a revolution, and the student union (DUCSU) can be the epicentre of that change.”

She further added:

“Students desire leadership that is free from political manipulation and is truly committed to improving the quality of education.”

Formation of Independent Panel

Umama revealed that she is currently working on forming an independent, research-oriented panel, and has called for active student participation. She also released a form for students interested in joining her panel.
