Musician Crown Engine has released a new song that combines contemporary hip-hop and rap with a familiar piece of Bengali musical heritage. Titled ‘Ki Hoilo!’, the track has been released by Gaanchil Music, with Crown Engine contributing both the lyrics and composition.
A distinctive feature of the song is its use of the line, ‘Porer jayga, porer jomi, ghor banaya ami roi’, from a well-known composition by lyricist and composer Abdul Latif. The line has been incorporated into the new production as a tribute to Latif and his contribution to Bengali music.
Asif Iqbal, head of Gaanchil Music, said the use of the line was intended as a mark of respect for Abdul Latif. Its inclusion places a familiar element of an earlier musical tradition within a modern arrangement built around rap and hip-hop.
Crown Engine said he used the rhythm and structure of rap to express his own musical ideas in the song. The track therefore brings together his original writing and composition with a contemporary sound, while retaining a recognisable connection to an established Bengali musical work.
Ali Adnan Ador has provided the chorus vocals. The musical arrangement was handled by Critical Mahmud, while MR Rabbi worked as the beat producer. Guitar parts were performed by Aryan Hasan and Tirtha Chakraborty.
The track was recorded at the Hall of Critics studio. Its production brings together rap, programmed beats, chorus vocals and guitar, giving the song a layered arrangement built around Crown Engine’s original composition.
The decision to incorporate a line from Abdul Latif’s work also gives ‘Ki Hoilo!’ a link between generations of Bengali music. Rather than presenting the older material in its original setting, the production places the familiar words alongside the rhythm and delivery associated with contemporary rap and hip-hop.
Such musical combinations can introduce elements of older Bengali songs to listeners who primarily engage with newer genres, while offering established music audiences a different interpretation of familiar material. In this case, the well-known line serves as a bridge between the song’s contemporary sound and its connection to Bengali musical tradition.
