The raid took place at approximately 9:00 pm on Saturday (26 September) in the Kajlarpar neighbourhood of Jatrabari.

Md Akhter Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of Police for Media and Public Relations at DMP, confirmed the details of the raid during a press briefing held at the DMP Media Centre on Sunday afternoon.

According to sources within the DB Wari Division, officers acted on precise intelligence regarding an illicit currency transaction in Kajlarpar. Upon searching the two suspects, detectives recovered a total of 3,902 forged banknotes in denominations of 1,000, 500, and 200 taka, amounting to a face value of 3.5 million taka.

During preliminary interrogations, the suspects admitted to collaborating with a wider network to procure counterfeit currency from various illicit suppliers across Dhaka. Their primary strategy involved hoarding forged notes and gradually circulating them into busy commercial markets as genuine tender to yield substantial illegal profits.

The distribution of fake currency poses a persistent challenge to local law enforcement, particularly in crowded commercial hubs like Jatrabari, where high transaction volumes often make it easier for criminals to pass off forged notes to unsuspecting traders. Police officers noted that these syndicates frequently target unsuspecting small business owners and consumers who may lack the training or equipment needed to verify security features on banknotes.

Md Raju, Officer-in-Charge of Jatrabari Police Station, stated that a formal case has been registered against both suspects under the Special Powers Act, 1974. Following preliminary processing, both individuals were produced before a magistrate court on Sunday morning, which subsequently remanded them to prison custody pending trial. Detectives are continuing their investigation to trace the underlying printing operations and identify additional members linked to the syndicate.
