Playing for the national team is a major ambition for any professional footballer. For Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, that journey began in the country’s youth system and eventually led to the senior side. The 24-year-old is now attracting attention for a different reason after deciding not to take part in Ireland’s UEFA Nations League fixture against Israel.
Bazunu, who has established himself as an important goalkeeper for Ireland, chose to withdraw from the match on the basis of his personal convictions. The decision came after discussions among Ireland’s players about the fixture. While the team ultimately decided to play, Bazunu opted to step aside.
Born on 20 February 2002 in Dublin, Bazunu has Nigerian and Irish family heritage. His father, Greenn Bazunu, is Nigerian, while his mother, Cara Farrell, is Irish. He grew up within Ireland’s football system and began representing the country at Under-15 level.
His progress through the youth ranks quickly attracted attention. While playing for Shamrock Rovers, Bazunu emerged as a promising young goalkeeper and caught the eye of Manchester City. In 2019, he joined the English club’s academy, giving him the opportunity to develop within one of the country’s leading football environments.
Bazunu later moved into senior football through loan spells at Rochdale and Portsmouth. Those periods provided valuable experience away from the academy system and allowed him to play competitive first-team football.
In 2022, he joined Southampton and featured in the English Premier League. He is currently playing for Bolton Wanderers in the English Championship. His club career has therefore included experience across different levels of English football, while his international career has progressed alongside it.
Bazunu made his senior Ireland debut at the age of 19. Since then, he has become an established option in goal for the national side and has earned 22 international caps.
His decision over the Israel fixture has now placed his personal views alongside his footballing career in the public spotlight.
Before the match, Ireland’s players held discussions about whether to take part. The team eventually decided to fulfil the fixture, but Bazunu informed the group that he would not play.
He later explained his decision on social media, saying that it had not been easy to make. Bazunu said he believed that the killing of innocent Palestinians was wrong and that this belief had influenced his decision to withdraw from the match.
He also made clear that his position was not directed at Israeli people or the Jewish community. Rather, he described his stance as opposition to the violence in the region and the loss of innocent lives.
For an international footballer, withdrawing from a fixture involving his own national team is a significant personal choice. Bazunu is still only 24 and remains at a stage of his career when regular international football is an important part of his development.
His career to date has taken him from Irish youth football to Shamrock Rovers, Manchester City’s academy, senior football in England and the Ireland national team. Each step has helped establish him as a professional goalkeeper with international experience.
The Israel fixture has added a different chapter to that journey. Bazunu’s decision has brought him attention beyond his performances between the posts, with his stated opposition to violence and the deaths of innocent people becoming a prominent part of the discussion surrounding his withdrawal.
His international career is likely to continue, with further opportunities to represent Ireland ahead. For now, however, it is his decision to step away from one particular fixture that has placed Gavin Bazunu in the wider spotlight.
