A police constable assigned to the evidence disposal section of Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court has been arrested with 1,790 yaba tablets, according to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
The arrested officer has been identified as Md Rezaul Karim, 45, who was serving as a constable in the court’s evidence disposal section. The DMP’s Prosecution Division confirmed the arrest on Monday, 28 September. Police detained him in the Sutrapur area of the capital at around 9.30pm on Sunday, 27 September, and seized the yaba tablets from his possession.
According to the case statement, a special team of the Criminal Investigation Department’s Dhaka Metro-South unit conducted an operation at a shop called Bismillah Biryani Ghar in Ward No. 28 under Sutrapur Police Station following information received from a confidential source.
Police said Rezaul Karim attempted to flee after noticing the operation. He was subsequently detained and searched. During the search, officers allegedly recovered 1,790 yaba tablets from a pocket of the trousers he was wearing. The seized tablets weighed a total of 179 grams, according to the case documents.
The estimated illicit market value of the seized yaba was put at Tk 537,000. Police also seized Tk 5,500 in cash, which the case statement described as money linked to yaba sales, along with a Vivo smartphone.
A case was filed with Sutrapur Police Station on Monday by DMP Inspector Md Kamruzzaman in connection with the incident. The Prosecution Division said the arrested constable could be taken into remand for questioning as part of the investigation.
Rezaul Karim’s position at the CMM Court’s evidence disposal section places him among personnel involved in duties relating to the handling and disposal of case exhibits. The seizure of a substantial quantity of yaba from a serving police constable has therefore prompted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged possession of the drugs.
Investigators are expected to examine how the yaba came into his possession and whether anyone else was involved. The seized tablets, cash and mobile phone are being treated as evidence in the case.
The allegations against Rezaul Karim remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings. His arrest and the recovery of the yaba do not, by themselves, establish his guilt, which will ultimately be determined through the legal process.
