Murder Accused ‘Pichchi Munna’ Arrested from Islambagh

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Munna, alias ‘Pichchi Munna’, the prime accused in the murder of Fazle Rabbi Sumon in Rayerbazar, Dhaka. He was detained on Wednesday from the Islambagh area of Chawkbazar in the capital.

The details of the arrest were shared during a press briefing held on Thursday (31 July) at the RAB Media Centre in Karwan Bazar by RAB-2 Commander Additional DIG Md Khalidul Haque Howlader.

Background and Motive

According to Additional DIG Khalidul Haque:

  • Both Sumon and Munna were residents of the same neighbourhood in Mohammadpur and had long been involved in drug trafficking.
  • Tensions had arisen between the two due to disputes over control of the illegal trade.
  • Recently, Sumon allegedly provided information to police that led to Munna’s arrest.
  • After securing bail, Munna became enraged and sought revenge.

Details of the Murder

Date Event
26 July Sumon visited his sister’s house in Pabna House Lane, Mohammadpur, from Narayanganj.
Same evening Munna lured Sumon to the Rayerbazar Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard through a mysterious phone call.
Murder scene Munna and his accomplices ambushed Sumon and brutally hacked him to death with sharp weapons.

 

Case and Legal Proceedings

Following the incident:

  • Sumon’s father filed a murder case at Mohammadpur Police Station.
  • The case names Munna and one other individual, along with 5–6 unidentified suspects.

Criminal Record

  • Munna has three other criminal cases filed against him in various police stations across Dhaka.
  • Authorities have labelled this a premeditated and retaliatory killing.

RAB stated that further investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the murder.
