Professor Islam enjoyed a distinguished academic career spanning nearly 35 years as a professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Rajshahi. Beyond his extensive teaching and research contributions, he held high-level executive responsibilities in higher education administration. He served as the eighth Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University in Kushtia, assuming office on 3 April 2004 and completing his tenure on 10 July 2006.

His active association with the University of Rajshahi continues to this day. Demonstrating his enduring commitment to his institutional roots, he served as the convenor of the organising committee for the fifth biennial reunion of the Economics Department Alumni Association in 2026.

As a specialized development bank, RAKUB plays a vital role in boosting agrarian productivity, supporting smallholders, and financing rural micro-enterprises throughout the 16 northern districts of the country. Financial analysts, local farming communities, and regional stakeholders have warmly welcomed his stewardship.
