Three people, including Tuhin Reza, a central vice-president of Chhatra League, have been arrested in a special operation by the Detective Branch (DB) of police in Jhenaidah.
The arrests were made on Wednesday night in the area of Yafat Filling Station in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila, according to police.
The two other people arrested have been identified as Emdadul Haque Sohag, 37, joint convener of Dhaka Metropolitan Sramik League and owner of Yafat Filling Station, and Saddam Hossain, 32, a Chhatra League leader from Naldanga Union in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila. Reza is 33.
Shariful Islam, officer-in-charge of the Jhenaidah DB, said a team of detectives carried out special operations at several locations across the district based on confidential information. During the operation, the three were arrested at the filling station area.
Following their arrest, the three men were taken to the DB office for initial questioning. They were later handed over to Kaliganj police station, the officer said.
According to the police, a case filed under laws relating to sabotage and countering terrorism had already been pending against the three at Kaliganj police station. Police are now processing their arrest in connection with that case and preparing to produce them before a court.
The authorities said the legal process concerning the arrested individuals is ongoing. Their alleged involvement in the case will be dealt with through the established legal proceedings, while further action will follow their appearance before the court.
Police, however, have not disclosed the specific sections of the case or provided detailed information about the allegations against the three men. As a result, the precise nature of the allegations remains unclear from the information released so far.
The arrests came as part of a wider series of special operations being conducted by the DB in different parts of Jhenaidah. Police said searches and other enforcement activities are continuing across the district based on information received by law enforcement agencies.
The latest operation has brought three individuals associated with different organisational roles into the ongoing legal process. Their next steps will depend on proceedings before the court and the details recorded in the pending case.
