Teacher jailed in Sylhet over alleged abuse of madrasa student

A madrasa teacher in Sylhet has been sent to jail after being arrested in a case involving allegations of sexual abuse and an attempted rape of a 12-year-old student.

The accused, identified as Motiur Rahman, teaches Arabic at a madrasa in the Kazir Bazar area of Sylhet city. Police said he was detained at the madrasa on Wednesday night and subsequently taken to Kotwali Police Station.

Kotwali Police Station officer-in-charge Khan Mohammad Mainul Zaker said the child’s mother filed the case against the teacher. On Thursday morning, police formally showed Rahman as arrested in the case and produced him before a court. The judge subsequently ordered that he be sent to jail.

According to the child’s account cited in the case, the Arabic teacher called the child and another student into a room and asked them to massage his head and feet. The two students complied. At one point, the other student left the room, after which Rahman allegedly closed the door and asked the child to continue massaging his head.

The child alleged that the teacher then sexually assaulted him and subsequently beat him. The student also claimed that Rahman had behaved similarly towards another child, who is no longer at the madrasa.

The child has called for justice following the alleged incident.

The child’s mother also urged the authorities to take strong legal action, saying she wanted to ensure that no other child would face similar abuse. She expressed deep concern over the alleged incident involving her son and called for the harshest punishment for the accused.

The case has now entered the judicial process. Police are expected to investigate the allegations and gather evidence as part of the proceedings. The accused teacher’s arrest and subsequent detention follow the complaint lodged by the child’s mother.

As the investigation proceeds, the allegations against Rahman remain subject to judicial determination. An accused person is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. The case also places renewed attention on the need for appropriate safeguards for children in educational institutions, particularly where students may be under the authority and supervision of teachers.
