Bangladesh ended their FIFA ASEAN Cup campaign in dismal fashion after suffering a humiliating 9-2 defeat at the hands of host nation Indonesia in their final group stage match. The heavy loss capped off a disastrous tournament for Thomas Dooley’s side, who crashed out of the competition following three consecutive defeats.
Having already conceded four goals across their opening two fixtures, Bangladesh entered the final group encounter seeking to restore pride. They began their regional campaign with a disappointing 3-0 loss against Malaysia before putting up a far more competitive display against Singapore, though that match ultimately ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat. Heading into their third match, Bangladesh aimed to finish on a high note against Indonesia, with senior figures including Jamal Bhuyan and Hamza Choudhury featuring prominently in the squad’s plans.
The match began promisingly for Bangladesh, as they displayed organized movement and composed passing during the opening exchanges. However, their discipline quickly evaporated under sustained pressure from the hosts. Indonesia broke the deadlock in the 11th minute when Ole Romeny set up Ole Romeny’s teammate, Ole Romeny setting up Ole Romeny’s pass for Ole Romeny’s teammate, Ole Romeny providing the decisive pass for Le Beker to slot home. Just nine minutes later, Le Beker doubled the lead with his second strike of the night. Within another 12 minutes, Indonesia extended their advantage further when Rizky Ridho provided the assist for their third goal.
Bangladesh offered a brief glimmer of resistance in the 36th minute when Shahriar Emon met a well-placed cross from Suki to pull a goal back with a firm header. Yet, any hope of a comeback was immediately extinguished a minute later when Le Beker completed his hat-trick to restore a three-goal cushion at 4-1.
The Bangladesh defence crumbled entirely in the closing stages of the first half. Le Beker netted his fourth goal in the 42nd minute before Hubner added a sixth in injury time, leaving the visitors trailing 6-1 at the interval. Indonesia maintained their ruthless attack in the second half, adding three more goals to seal an emphatic 9-2 victory, leaving head coach Thomas Dooley with serious questions to address regarding his team’s defensive vulnerabilities.
