Top seed Alexander Zverev achieved a major career milestone at the Toronto Masters on Thursday, registering his 500th ATP match win. The German had to dig deep, coming from a set down to defeat Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 6-2 and advance to the fourth round of the US Open warm-up tournament.
Zverev, a 24-time ATP title winner, now joins an elite group of players who have notched 500 career wins on the professional tour.
“It’s a great achievement,” said Zverev.
“Not a lot of players reach this milestone. But I still want 500 more — maybe even more,” he added with a smile.
“You always want to win as many matches as possible. I’m all about this.”

Zverev’s performance improved steadily after a closely contested 82-minute opening set, particularly from the baseline.
“I started playing better from the baseline and found my rhythm a bit. My backhand felt off, but I was comfortable and happy with my level.”
He next faces Francisco Cerúndolo, who defeated fellow Argentine Tomás Martín Etcheverry 6-3, 6-4.
Rising Stars Shine: Michelsen and Tien Make Headlines
Alex Michelsen, aged 20, reached the fourth round of a Masters 1000 event for the first time in his career, overcoming third seed Lorenzo Musetti in a dramatic 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 win. Despite committing nearly 50 unforced errors and converting only 2 of 9 break points, the American held firm and converted his seventh match point to seal victory.
“I’ve put in a lot of hard work and it’s paying off a little bit. I was wondering when it would happen — and I guess it is starting to happen now.”

He will now face fellow American Learner Tien, who dispatched compatriot Reilly Opelka 7-6 (7/3), 6-3.

Meanwhile, eighth seed Casper Ruud showed grit and resilience in battling past Portugal’s Nuno Borges 7-5, 6-4. The Norwegian had missed Wimbledon due to injury and was only playing his fourth match since Roland Garros.
Ruud trailed 4-1 in the opening set and faced two break points that could have sent him 5-1 down, but he clawed back and took control.
“I just crawled into the first set,” said Ruud, who hit nine aces.
“I raised my return game and got more balls back into play.”
“It was nice to get my revenge,” he added, referencing his loss to Borges at Roland Garros in May.
