Pretorius Rewrites T20 Record with Stunning 188

South African batting sensation Lhuan-dre Pretorius has etched his name into the history of men’s Twenty20 cricket after producing a breathtaking 188 off just 79 deliveries for the Titans against the Knights in Bloemfontein.

Pretorius’s extraordinary innings not only powered the Titans to 267 for three but also saw him break Chris Gayle’s long-standing record for the highest individual score in men’s T20 cricket. Gayle had held the record since the 2013 Indian Premier League, when he smashed an unbeaten 175 off 66 balls for Royal Challengers Bengaluru against the now-defunct Pune Warriors.

For more than a decade, Gayle’s explosive innings had remained the benchmark for individual batting performances in the shortest format. Pretorius finally surpassed it with an innings packed with power and aggression, striking 15 fours and 13 sixes.

The 20-year-old reached his half-century from just 24 deliveries before accelerating further. He brought up his century from another 16 balls, meaning he needed only 40 deliveries to reach three figures. His 150 came from 58 balls, putting him within touching distance of an unprecedented double century.

However, Pretorius was eventually dismissed for 188, leaving him 12 runs short of becoming the first man to score a double century in men’s T20 cricket.

The Titans’ total of 267 for three was also one of the highest team scores recorded in the competition. The franchise’s own 271 for three remains the highest total in the tournament.

The Knights struggled to cope with the enormous target and were bowled out for 143, handing the Titans a commanding 124-run victory.

The performance was Pretorius’s first appearance of the 2026–27 season, although he had already shown impressive form in the previous month’s tri-series involving Namibia and Zimbabwe. He scored 94 and 101 in that competition, underlining his growing reputation as one of South Africa’s most exciting young batters.

Pretorius has already made an impact at international level. He has represented South Africa in two Tests, three ODIs and 17 T20Is. In T20 internationals, he has maintained a strike rate of 154.58, reflecting his aggressive approach to batting.

His rapid rise began at a remarkably young age. After making a name for himself in South African school cricket, Pretorius made his professional debut at 17. He made his first-class debut for the Titans against the Warriors in December 2024 and immediately announced his arrival by scoring 120 in the first innings.

His Test career has also produced a landmark achievement. On his Test debut against Zimbabwe in July last year, Pretorius scored a century at the age of 19 years and 93 days, becoming South Africa’s youngest Test centurion in the country’s 136-year Test history.

Now, with a record-breaking 188 in T20 cricket, Pretorius has added another remarkable chapter to his rapidly developing career. His latest innings combined power, pace and sustained aggression, while also demonstrating the extraordinary potential of a batter who is still at the beginning of his international journey.
