Law enforcement agencies in Cumilla have launched a large-scale crackdown on youth-led crime, detaining 363 individuals suspected of involvement in juvenile gang activities during a single night-long operation across the district.
The coordinated drive, executed by the Detective Branch (DB) and Cumilla District Police, commenced on Friday evening, 2 October, and continued past midnight until 1:00 AM. Officers targeted high-risk zones, urban hotspots, and known hangouts across all 18 police stations in the district.
In a formal press release issued on Saturday morning, 3 October, Additional Superintendent of Police Md Lutfur Rahman confirmed the detentions, stating that the operation was carried out under the direct instruction and active leadership of District Superintendent of Police Md Anisuzzaman. Senior officers from various police units were deployed on the ground to oversee the raids.
This latest operation forms part of an intensified, multi-phase law enforcement campaign aimed at tackling gang culture, curtailing street crime, and curbing the rising trade of illicit drugs. According to official figures released by the district police, a total of 2,005 individuals have been detained across five successive phases of this district-wide crackdown.
Authorities emphasised that those brought into custody are currently undergoing rigorous screening to verify their degree of involvement in illegal activities. Legal proceedings will follow for individuals found to be linked to criminal offences.
Directing attention to public concerns regarding potential overreach during large-scale operations, Md Lutfur Rahman assured that strict monitoring mechanisms are in place to prevent the harassment of innocent citizens. He reiterated that the primary objective of these recurring drives is preventive—deterring young people from entering criminal networks and restoring public order.
Rising juvenile delinquency and anti-social behavior among adolescents have emerged as significant law enforcement challenges across urban and suburban regions in Bangladesh in recent years. Local police departments have increasingly relied on preemptive block raids and community surveillance to dismantle informal youth gangs involved in extortion, petty theft, and violent altercations. District authorities maintain that such operations will continue until violent street gangs are thoroughly suppressed.
