Bangladesh’s men’s cricket campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games ended in utter disappointment as the side returned home empty-handed, prompting head coach Mohammad Salahuddin to issue a public apology to the nation. Captain Litton Das had set his sights on reaching the final to guarantee at least a silver medal, but a crushing 63-run defeat to a second-string Sri Lankan side in the bronze-medal match sealed a dismal tournament for the Tigers.
Speaking to reporters in Japan following the match, a crestfallen Salahuddin admitted complete responsibility for the team’s failure to meet expectations. He expressed deep embarrassment over the performance, stating that as coach, he felt the management and squad had collectively failed the nation. Salahuddin openly apologised to the public, acknowledging that the team fell well short of the promises and high hopes expressed prior to the tournament.
The head coach was candid in his assessment of the defeat, singling out key bowling lapses and a top-order batting collapse as primary factors. Specialist T20 fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman came under sharp criticism after conceding 25 runs in a single over, while leg-spinner Rishad Hossain also proved expensive during the closing overs. Salahuddin noted that despite a favourable pitch, the experienced bowlers allowed the game to slip away in crucial periods. He added that losing early wickets during the powerplay left the batting unit with an impossible mountain to climb.
Despite the severe criticism, captain Litton Das stepped up to defend his teammates during the post-match press conference. Das stated that the players consistently fight hard for their country and shared the deep sense of shame regarding the outcome. He emphasized that the failure belonged to the entire squad as a collective unit rather than individual players, promising that the team would work tirelessly to address their shortcomings and rebuild from the setback.
The failure marks a sharp departure from Bangladesh’s historical record at the Games. Having participated in three previous editions, the men’s team had secured a medal every single time, including a memorable gold medal on their debut in 2010. Expectations were extraordinarily high heading into Japan, with gold being the primary objective. However, a semi-final defeat against Pakistan dashed those gold-medal hopes before the heavy loss to Sri Lanka completely denied them a spot on the podium.
The third-place play-off saw Bangladesh elect to field after winning the toss, initially asserting control by reducing Sri Lanka to 51 for 4 at the halfway mark. The discipline dissipated rapidly in the second half of the innings, allowing Sri Lanka to recover and post a total of 165. Bangladesh’s reply collapsed instantly at the top of the order. Openers Tanjid Hasan and Saif Hassan, along with captain Litton Das, were all dismissed for ducks. Number nine batter Nasum Ahmed top-scored with a modest 26 runs as the side was bundled out for 102, concluding a deeply painful chapter in Bangladeshi cricket history.
