A fugitive sentenced to death for the gruesome murder of a teenage girl in Dhaka has been apprehended by law enforcement officers after evading justice for nearly fourteen years.
The convict, identified as 45-year-old Md Emon Hossain, was arrested during a targeted raid conducted on Saturday morning in the Pubail area of Gazipur district. The operation was executed by a team from the Biral Police Station in Dinajpur, following weeks of covert surveillance and intelligence gathering. Authorities subsequently presented the convict before the court on Sunday morning to initiate the legal procedures required to execute his sentence.
The criminal case dates back to 25 September 2012, when a teenage girl was brutally killed in the Dakshinkhan area under the Uttara Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Emon, a resident of Jagatpur Mahajanpara in the Biral sub-district of Dinajpur, was identified as the prime suspect in the investigation. Police charges outlined that the victim had her throat slit in a deliberate act of violence.
Following a thorough trial process in absentia, the trial court found Emon guilty of capital murder and handed down a death sentence. However, the convict absconded shortly after the crime, managing to evade law enforcement agencies by frequently shifting locations and living under disguise across different districts. Upon the final verdict, the court issued an execution warrant against him. Since his permanent address fell under the jurisdiction of Biral, the warrant was officially forwarded to the local police station for execution.
Investigators relied on advanced information technology, tracking cellular networks and combining digital evidence with confidential informant tips to pinpoint Emon’s exact location in Gazipur.
Confirming the arrest, Al Imran, the Officer-in-Charge of Biral Police Station, stated that the convict had deliberately remained in hiding for well over a decade to escape the gallows. He added that the police team tracked his movements continuously before launching the successful morning operation in Pubail. The convict has now been remanded into judicial custody, paving the way for the ultimate execution of his court-mandated death penalty.
