A 30-year-old rickshaw puller died in hospital on Sunday night after allegedly being abducted and brutally tortured over suspected involvement in a residential theft in Pabna Sadar upazila. The victim, identified as Sumon, succumbed to his injuries at Pabna General Hospital around 8:00 pm on 4 October 2026.
Sumon was the son of Robi Hossain, a resident of Gachhpara village under Sadar upazila. He earned a modest living as a day labourer pulling a battery-powered rickshaw in and around the district town.
According to family members, an unidentified rickshaw driver left Sumon in a critically injured state near a local shop in front of his family home on Sunday afternoon. Surprised by his condition, relatives rushed to his aid and brought him inside their house. Upon inspecting his body, they discovered severe physical trauma and bruises inflicted across multiple areas. As Sumon’s health deteriorated rapidly, his family rushed him to Pabna General Hospital for urgent medical care. Despite emergency intervention, attending doctors pronounced him dead at approximately 8:00 pm.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that a burglary had occurred several days earlier at a residential property in the Bilbhaduri area of Sadar upazila. A group of individuals suspected Sumon of being involved in the break-in. Acting on unverified suspicions, perpetrators seized Sumon earlier on Sunday and subjected him to intense physical assault at an undisclosed location.
Officer-in-Charge of Pabna Sadar Police Station, Tarikul Islam, confirmed the incident, stating that the attackers transported the victim on a rickshaw and dumped him near his residence once his condition turned critical following the beating.
Law enforcement authorities have initiated a thorough inquiry to apprehend those responsible for the fatal vigilante violence. While a formal criminal case is yet to be filed by the victim’s family, police officers have gathered crucial intelligence and identified key suspects involved in the assault. Multiple operational teams have been deployed across the upazila to conduct raids and bring the perpetrators to justice. The victim’s body remains at the hospital morgue pending an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
