Tragic Double Collision on Dhaka-Mawa Expressway Claims Motorcyclist’s Life

A fatal sequence of collisions unfolded on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway in Munshiganj during the early hours of Tuesday, leaving a motorcyclist dead and a bus passenger injured. The consecutive accidents occurred within minutes of each other on the Dhaka-bound lane in the Sholaghar Bhuichitra area under Srinagar upazila.

The deceased motorcyclist has been identified as 40-year-old Md Aslam Hossain, a resident of Shahbagh in Dhaka. The injured passenger, 47-year-old Md Nazrul Islam, hails from Mirzaganj upazila in Patuakhali district.

According to Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, Deputy Assistant Director of Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, the emergency dispatch was received at the Srinagar Fire Station around 3:25 am. An unidentified vehicle travelling at high speed rammed Aslam’s motorcycle from behind. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after to find the rider dead from the severity of the impact.

The initial tragedy triggered a secondary smash moments later. As a Dhaka-bound passenger coach operated by Liton Travels approached the crash site, its driver decelerated to navigate the hazard on the road. An oncoming bus owned by Abdullah Paribahan, trailing closely behind at high speed, failed to brake in time. It slammed forcefully into the rear of the Liton Travels coach, causing injuries to Nazrul Islam, who was seated inside the lead bus.

Two specialized rescue units from the Srinagar Fire Station carried out the recovery operation. Firefighters recovered Aslam’s body and transferred custody to the highway police, while Nazrul was swiftly ferried via ambulance to Srinagar Upazila Health Complex for medical care.

Md Sohel Rana, Officer-in-Charge of Hasara Highway Police Station, confirmed that the body of the deceased was formally handed over to his relatives on Tuesday morning following due procedure. Police have registered a case under the Road Transport Act to investigate the sequence of events and identify the runaway vehicle responsible for the initial fatal hit.

The Dhaka-Mawa Expressway serves as a vital arterial corridor connecting the capital with southern districts, characterised by fast-moving traffic. The double collision highlights the hazards created when sudden obstructions occur on high-speed thoroughfares, where trailing drivers often lack sufficient reaction time. Police investigations remain ongoing to trace the offending drivers and vehicles involved.
