In a swift transition of leadership, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed stylish opening batter Smriti Mandhana as the new captain of the Indian women’s cricket team across all three formats. The announcement came within twelve hours of Harmanpreet Kaur stepping down from the role following internal disagreements with the governing body.
Harmanpreet announced her sudden decision on Tuesday morning, ending a landmark tenure that saw Indian women’s cricket reach unprecedented heights. Under her captaincy, India secured their historic maiden World Cup title and clinched a gold medal at the Asian Games. However, reports suggest tension flared when board officials proposed relieving her of the T20 International captaincy while retaining her for Test and One Day International (ODI) fixtures. Refusing a split-captaincy arrangement, Harmanpreet opted to relinquish leadership across all formats simultaneously.
Sharing an emotional message on social media, the outgoing skipper stated that stepping down was far from easy. She reflected on years of sacrifice and personal compromise, noting that she had consistently put the team’s interests ahead of her individual accomplishments throughout her stint as leader.
The BCCI moved rapidly to name Mandhana, who previously served as vice-captain and was widely regarded as the natural successor. A cornerstone of India’s batting line-up, the elegant left-hander brings both immense international experience and proven leadership credentials to the role.
Mandhana is no stranger to captaincy responsibilities. In domestic franchise cricket, she leads Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Women’s Premier League (WPL). On the international stage, she has stepped in as stand-in captain on several occasions with impressive results. Under her guidance as interim skipper, India maintained a flawless record in ODIs, winning all four matches played. Her T20I record as stand-in leader is equally commendable, yielding 11 victories from 18 matches.
With a crucial international calendar ahead, the BCCI’s prompt appointment aims to ensure operational stability and maintain team morale during this transitional phase. Cricket experts and fans alike anticipate that Mandhana’s tactical acumen and steady presence at the top of the order will guide the national side into an ambitious new era.
