A police sub-inspector was injured after being stabbed while attempting to detain suspected robbers during an operation in Tongi, Gazipur. Police detained two men following the incident.
The incident occurred at around 8.30pm on Tuesday in the Sakhinagar area of Sataish in Tongi. The injured officer, Sub-Inspector Hanif Mahmud, is currently serving at Tongi West Police Station.
According to police sources, officers from Tongi West Police Station launched an operation in the area to arrest individuals allegedly involved in robbery. During the operation, police moved to detain two men identified as Shawon and Sagar Mia.
The two men allegedly resisted the arrest and attacked the police officers. At one stage, when officers attempted to take them into custody, one of the suspects allegedly used a knife to attack Sub-Inspector Hanif Mahmud.
The officer was stabbed in his left leg, causing a deep wound. Despite sustaining the injury, he did not retreat from the operation, according to police.
Colleagues initially took Hanif Mahmud to Gutia International Hospital in Tongi, where he received preliminary treatment. He was subsequently referred to Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital in Dhaka for further medical care.
Police later detained Shawon and Sagar Mia. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation. Police are also expected to establish the extent of the suspects’ alleged involvement in robbery-related activities in the area.
The incident underscores the risks faced by law-enforcement officers during operations to apprehend suspected street criminals. Arrest attempts can become confrontational when suspects resist detention, particularly when weapons are involved.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Shafiqul Rahman said the sub-inspector was injured while trying to apprehend identified suspects allegedly involved in robbery.
He also said Hanif Mahmud continued carrying out his duties despite the risk to his safety. The officer’s actions allowed the operation to continue, with police eventually detaining the two suspects.
The two men are now in police custody as the authorities proceed with the necessary legal measures. Further investigation will clarify the circumstances of the stabbing and determine whether the detained individuals were involved in other robbery incidents in the area.
