Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has mounted an extensive capital-wide enforcement drive, issuing 2,999 cases against motorists for various traffic violations across the metropolis.
Organised by the DMP’s dedicated traffic division, the day-long operations took place across all major zones of the city on Tuesday, 6 October. The clampdown represents part of an intensified campaign aimed at tackling chronic congestion, curbing reckless driving, and restoring order to Dhaka’s notoriously chaotic roadways.
Official figures released by the DMP reveal that Gulshan traffic division recorded the highest number of prosecutions during the drive, registering 855 cases alone. Wari division followed with 505 cases, whilst officers in Motijheel recorded 462 infractions. Elsewhere across the capital, Uttara zone filed 406 cases, Mirpur logged 318, Tejgaon reported 199, Lalbagh registered 146, and Ramna division accounted for 108 cases.
Traffic officers targeted a broad spectrum of motor vehicles during the operations, penalising private and commercial drivers alike. Offending transport included motorcycles, municipal and long-distance buses, three-wheeled compressed natural gas (CNG) auto-rickshaws, cargo trucks, and covered vans. Beyond financial penalties and formal cases, police seized and sent 639 vehicles to official dump yards for severe non-compliance, whilst towing away a further 286 vehicles using wreckers.
Dhaka’s municipal roads frequently face severe gridlock caused by unlawful parking, lane driving violations, route non-compliance, and unlicensed operators. DMP officials confirmed that strict field enforcement, random checkpoints, and targeted operations will remain ongoing across all residential and commercial corridors to enforce traffic discipline and safeguard commuters.
